Daniel 9: 24 The 70 Weeks of Years Prophecy

24 Seventy weeks are shortened upon thy people, and upon thy holy city, that transgression may be finished, and sin may have an end, and iniquity may be abolished; and everlasting justice may be brought; and vision and prophecy may be fulfilled; and the saint of saints may be anointed.

25 Know thou therefore, and take notice: that from the going forth of the word, to build up Jerusalem again, unto Christ the prince, there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks: and the street shall be built again, and the walls in straitness of times.

26 And after sixty-two weeks Christ shall be slain: and the people that shall deny him shall not be his. And a people with their leader that shall come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary: and the end thereof shall be waste, and after the end of the war the appointed desolation.

27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many, in one week: and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fall: and there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation: and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation, and to the end.

This prophecy of “The 70 weeks of years” prophecies the length of time given to God’s people until the coming of the Christ.  However, because of the events that take place at the end of the world, it also refers to the length of time before the coming of the Anti-Christ.  The last week, or the 70th week, is the week of the reign of the Anti-Christ, his setting up the abomination of desolation on the second altar, and of his persecution of God’s people.  Click here for our material showing the fulfillment of the mid-week breaking of the Treaty and the fulfillment of the 70th week.

Before we get into the prophecy and it’s fulfillment in the history of the Church, we would like to note the following:

  1. The text from the Book of Daniel doesn’t say ‘weeks of years’, but simply refers to weeks.  A week is a period of 7.
  2. The text from the Book of Daniel doesn’t indicate that each ‘week’ has to be of the same amount of time.  It is possible that one week will be longer or shorter than the others.  This is what we will see with the very last ‘week’, or the 70th ‘week’.

Fulfillment of Prophecy in the History of the Catholic Church

First 7 Weeks

Daniel 9:25  “Know thou therefore, and take notice: that from the going forth of the word, to build up Jerusalem again, unto Christ the prince, there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks: and the street shall be built again, and the walls in straitness of times.”

Pope Nicholas V was elected pope on March 6th, 1447.  Rome was in a state of disrepair and Pope Nicholas had grand plans to build up Rome and make it a center of Renaissance learning and architecture.  He also was the first to announce plans to build a new St. Peter’s Basilica, to replace the old and falling down Basilica that Constantine build in the 4th century.  Pope Nicholas V wasn’t able to progress very far in his plans during his papacy, but he did make the decree to build up the walls of Rome and to construct St. Peter’s Basilica.  The decree was his first priority and one of the very first things he did during his papacy.  Click here for a link to read about Pope Nicholas V.  Read the section entitled ‘Papacy’.

Old St. Peter’s Basilica, built by Constantine in the 4th century.  Pope Nicholas V decreed the building of the new St. Peter’s Basilica that is still standing today in Rome.

At this point, there is a shortage of information concerning when the walls of Rome were actually finished, per the decree of Pope Nicholas V.  It is certain that the walls were not finished during his papacy and were finished by one of his papal successors.  For the prophecy to fit exactly, the walls would have to be finished around 1495 or 1496.  If anyone would like to help research this part, please feel free.  However, it is very likely that the walls would have been finished around this time, because such a large scale construction project would take a significant amount of time.  St. Peter’s Basilica had her cornerstone laid down in 1506, which also is very close to this period of time.

62 Weeks (directly following the first 7 weeks)

Mussolini rebuilding the streets of Rome.  This is the rebuilding of Via Del Mare, 1930.

A period of 62 weeks follows the finishing of the walls per the decree of Pope Nicholas V.  Thus, if we move forward 434 years (62 * 7 = 434) from the construction of the walls in 1495, we come to 1929.  1929 is the signing of the Lateran Treaty in which Mussolini sat down with Catholic Church representatives and signed  a document in which the Church was given present day Vatican City.  In exchange, the Church promised to swear oaths of allegiance to the Italian Government.  Click here for a link to the oath (you need to scroll down a little bit).

Mussolini was obsessed with rebuilding Rome, for his new Fascist empire.  The Church was definitely in the ‘straightness of times’, since it was a very very difficult time for the Church.  Mussolini was squeezing the authority of the Church, and trying to assert his own authority and that of the State over and above the Catholic Church!  Mussolini started his Roman reconstruction projects during the 1920’s, but it wasn’t until the 1930’s that he worked on widening the streets and other rebuilding projects around Rome.

Final Week

Daniel 9: 26-27  “And after sixty-two weeks Christ shall be slain: and the people that shall deny him shall not be his. And a people with their leader that shall come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary: and the end thereof shall be waste, and after the end of the war the appointed desolation.  And he shall confirm the covenant with many, in one week: and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fall: and there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation: and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation, and to the end.”

This week starts with the signing of the Lateran Treaty on February 11th, 1929 and continues until the resignation of Benedict XVI on February 11th, 2013.  The signing of the Lateran Treaty fulfills this passage:  “And he shall confirm the covenant with many, in one week”.  Click here for a more detailed look into this final week.  This ‘week’ is a period of ‘7 times’.  Precisely, this period is a ‘week of 12 years’ in which each day of the week is 12 years long.  This does not contradict the prophecy of Daniel, since at no time does Scripture say how long each week is, nor that one week cannot be a different length than the other weeks.

Another related fulfillment of prophecy directly corresponds to this final week, and that is of the prophecy in the Book of the Apocalypse concerning the 7 kings and the Beasts of the Apocalypse.  This will be demonstrated in our material concerning the Beasts of the Apocalypse.  Click here for our material on this subject. The period starting February 11th, 1929 and ending on February 11th, 2013 is the period of the 7 kings.  These are the 7 claimants to the papacy during that time period.  This exact time period is also the ‘final week’.

“And he shall confirm the covenant with many, in one week: and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fall: and there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation: and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation, and to the end.”

It was during the middle of this time period, in 1971, that the Tridentine Mass was forbidden by the Vatican, and the Novus Ordo was universally imposed.  Since Our Lord is present in the Holy Eucharist, then Christ was slain after the 62nd week since He was slain in the forbidding of the Tridentine Mass.

“And after sixty-two weeks Christ shall be slain: and the people that shall deny him shall not be his. And a people with their leader that shall come, shall destroy the city and the sanctuary:

The people who rejected Traditional Catholic doctrine, practices and liturgy have rejected Christ and His Church.  Thus, the people shall not be His.  These are the unfortunate adherents of Novus Ordo.  Thus, we have the fulfillment of the 70 weeks prophecy.
