Daniel’s Statue

31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold there was as it were a great statue: this statue, which was great and high, tall of stature, stood before thee, and the look thereof was terrible.

32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, but the breast and the arms of silver, and the belly and the thighs of brass:

33 And the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of clay.

34 Thus thou sawest, till a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands: and it struck the statue upon the feet thereof that were of iron and of clay, and broke them in pieces.

35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of a summer’s thrashingfloor, and they were carried away by the wind: and there was no place found for them: but the stone that struck the statue, became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

36 This is the dream: we will also tell the interpretation thereof before thee, O king.

37 Thou art a king of kings: and the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, and strength, and power, and glory:

38 And all places wherein the children of men, and the beasts of the field do dwell: he hath also given the birds of the air into thy hand, and hath put all things under thy power: thou therefore art the head of gold.

39 And after thee shall rise up another kingdom, inferior to thee, of silver: and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the world.

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as iron. As iron breaketh into pieces, and subdueth all things, so shall that break and destroy all these.

41 And whereas thou sawest the feet, and the toes, part of potter’s clay, and part of iron: the kingdom shall be divided, but yet it shall take its origin from the iron, according as thou sawest the iron mixed with the miry clay.

42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.

43 And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall be mingled indeed together with the seed of man, but they shall not stick fast one to another, as iron cannot be mixed with clay.

44 But in the days of those kingdoms the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people, and it shall break in pieces, and shall consume all these kingdoms, and itself shall stand for ever.

45 According as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof is faithful.

There are many interpretations and ideas for the statue of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream.  We do know for sure that King Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians are the head of gold, since it explicitly says so in Holy Scripture.  Here is some common conjecture for the rest of the statue:

Chest of silver (2 arms) – This represents the next kingdom that ruled over Judea and Jerusalem, namely the Medo-Persians.  This kingdom was an alliance between the Medes and the Persians, thus the 2 arms.

Midsection of Bronze (2 upper thighs) – The Medo Persian empire was conquered by Alexander the Great.  His kingdom was divided into 4 parts, but two of those parts ended up ruling over Jerusalem.  These two kingdoms were the Seleucid Empire and the Ptolemaic Empire.  These two empires were both Greek, and both came from Alexander’s empire, thus the mid section of bronze turns into the two upper thighs, which are of the same material.

Legs of Iron – The Roman Empire eventually grew in power and supplanted the Greeks as rulers over Jerusalem and Judea.  The Romans conquered the Greek Ptolemaic empire and the Seleucid Empire.  Thus, the iron legs continue from the bronze upper thighs, but they are separate from each other since they are Roman continuations of two separate kingdoms.

Toes of Iron and Clay – The Roman sub division of Egypt and Judea are each ruled over by 5 rulers until the birth of Christ.

In Egypt, the 5 Roman rulers were

  1. Gaius Cornelius Gallus
  2. Aelius Gallus
  3. Gaius Petronius
  4. Publius Rubrius Barbarus
  5. Gaius Turranius.

In Judea, the 5 Roman rulers before the birth of Christ were

  1. Antipater the Idumean
  2. Phasael
  3. Herod the Great
  4. Herod Antipas
  5. Herod Archelaus

These rulers were miry clay, in so much as they were Jews, but they were dirty in so much as they were not pure Jews, but half breeds (Edomites). They are miry clay mixed with Iron because they conspired with the Romans, who are iron.  ** Note**  When Herod the Great died in 4 BC (circa), he left his kingdom to his three sons, Herod Philip, Herod Antipas and Herod Achhelaus.  However, the territory of Herod Philip was far in the north east, and was not part of the land of the Jews.  Thus, only the other two ruled over Jews, and thus, only those two are counted as toes in the statue.    The Roman rulers in Egypt did also rule over the Jews, as there was a very sizeable Jewish population in Alexandria, as well as the Jews who were centered in Heliopolis, where they built a second Jewish Temple in Leontopolis.  This was called “the land of Onias” and dates back to the Maccabean period, when Onias III fled Judah, and went to Ptolemaic Egypt.

Christ is represented by the stone that is carved from the mountain without human hands, and smashes the feet of the statue.  The rock turns into a mountain, which represents the Kingdom of God on Earth, the Catholic Church.

Since the entire history of the Catholic Church is prefigured by the entire history of Israel in the Old Testament, the statue of Nebuchadnezzar appears to be fulfilled again in the New Testament.  And, at the end of the statue, instead of the first coming of Christ and the establishment of the Catholic Church, it would seem that the Second Coming of Christ will occur and the establishment of the everlasting Covenant and the Heavenly Jerusalem.

Just as the statue of Nebuchadnezzar was concerned with the empires that would rule over Jerusalem and Judea until the first coming of Christ, it would seem that the New Testament statue would concern itself with the empires that ruled over Rome and Italy until the second coming of Christ.  So, with all this in mind, and following the logic to the end, the following would be a New Testament fulfillment of the statue of Nebuchadnezzar.

“King of Kings” – Daniel 2: 37

Head of Gold

Old Testament

The Book of Daniel states that Nebuchadnezzar is the head of gold, and his empire presumably would also be the head of gold along with him.  The Babylonians ruled over Jerusalem and Judea, and they were the first non-Jewish ruler to rule over Judea since the time of the King David.  It was Nebuchadnezzar who conquered Jerusalem and took the Jews captives in Babylon.  Nebuchadnezzar came from the north to invade Judea, as the Book of Jeremiah indicates.

New Testament

In 1860 and 1870, the newly forming Kingdom of Italy was forming during the Risorgimento.  Victor Emmanuel II was King of Savoy, the small state in northern Italy.  He came from the north and conquered all of Italy.  The Italians call him “Father of Fathers”, since he united Italy for the first time.  King Victor Emmanuel confiscated the papal states and the popes described themselves as “prisoners in the Vatican”.  The Church ruled over the papal states from the early days of Charlemagne.

Persians – King Cyrus

Issued Decree that let Jews go back to Jerusalem

Chest of Silver

Old Testament

Cyrus the Great, the leader of the Medo-Persian empire, conquered the Babylonians.  Very soon, he issued a decree that the Jews could go back to Jerusalem after being captives in Babylon for 70 years.

New Testament

Benito Mussolini was the Prime Minister of Italy under King Victor Emmanuel III from 1922 until 1943.  It was Mussolini who signed the Lateran Treaty with the Catholic Church in 1929, which gave the Church a small portion of Her land back in the form of Vatican City.  From the first confiscation of the Papal States in 1960, to the signing of the Lateran Treaty is 69 years (not 70 years like the Jews).

Alexander the Great

Conquered Persians, ruled 12 years, empire was split into 4 parts

Midsection of Bronze

Old Testament

Alexander the Great came sweeping across the ancient world with incredible speed and power.  He conquered most of the ancient world, including the Persians and the area of Judea and the holy city of Jerusalem.  The First Book of Maccabees says that he reigned for 12 years.  He died suddenly, and his vast empire was divided into 4 parts.  The two most powerful divisions fought for control of the area of Israel/Judea.  These two Greek empires were the Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires.  The Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires fought for almost 100 years.  They were eventually supplanted by Roman rule.

New Testament

Franklin Delano Roosevelt instigated the formation of the Allied Powers of World War II, which also became the United Nations.  The Allies conquered the European Fascists, including Hitler and Mussolini.  Roosevelt was president for 12 years, but died suddenly.  Germany was divided into 4 parts, with the Americans, Soviets, French and British ruling over conquered Germany.  However, it was the Democratic west (led by America) and the Soviet Union that would fight over a long period of time (the cold war).  This fight occurred very poignantly in the country of Italy.  From the time after world war II, until the start of the European Union, Italy was ruled by the Christian Democratic party (funded by America) and the Communist party (funded by Soviet Union).  These two super powers fought for control of Italy through the use of finance and politics.  This two party system ended upon the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of the European Union.

Roman Empire

Rose to power and supplanted the Greek empires which stemmed from Alexander the Great

Legs of Iron & 10 Toes

Old Testament

The two Greek Empires of Ptolemy and Seleucid were at war for over 100 years.  However, neither side prevailed because the Roman Empire rose to power and supplanted the Greek empires.  The Romans kept the same political divisions of Ptolemaic Egypt and Seleucid Judea, and the Romans placed their rulers over each kingdom respectively.  Thus, from the time of Roman rule until the first coming of Christ, there were 5 Roman Egyptian rulers and also 5 Roman Judean rulers (the Herod dynasty).  See above for a description of how this fulfills the prophecy of the 10 toes, 5 on each foot… which were made of miry clay mixed with iron.

New Testament

Upon the fall of the Soviet Union, and the decline of American influence in European politics, the European Union was formed in 1993.  This new European empire cast its shadow over Italian politics.  From this point, the two party system of the Christian Democratic Party (American funded) and the Communist Party (Soviet funded) was done away with.  When research was being done in January of 2017, Italy had 10 major political parties.  5 of them were left-progressive parties and 5 of them were right-conservative parties.

However, in February of 2017, another major political party was formed.  Now there are 5 left-progressive parties and 5 right-conservative parties.  The eleventh party defies a left-right classification and claims that it is not a party but a movement.  This is the 5 star movement in Italy.  Here are the current political parties in Italy.  Read about them and discover that 5 are left and 5 are right!

European Union

Encompasses the same general geographic area as the Ancient Roman Empire.  The European Union was formed in 1993, two years after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.  The cold war political system which stemmed from the Allied powers conquering Europe was thus supplanted by the new system of politics led by the European Union.
